This, the first of many adventures , takes us to a battlefield, where friends can chillax, get away from the hustle and bustle of the corporate world, deal with any frustrations and most importantly release some anger by “bussing some guns” at each other.

The Journey

The Journey begins with a brisk morning drive from the preferred linkup spot (my yard) to Moneague.  Making a short stop at Faith's Pen for some tan coloured fried flour. We then make the long trek towards unfamiliar territory through the untouched greenery of Claremont, to the old Colonial styled town at Bamboo; pollinated by friendly locals, then finally arriving at our destination, FREE HILL.  We're surrounded by breathtaking panoramic views of neighbouring communities and the north coast.

Free Hill Snipet and History

An enduring reminder of Jamaica's past, when sugar was king, and the wealth of the estate owners was calculated by the number of slaves owned.

After the abolition of slavery in 1834 and emancipation in 1838, estate owners still expected freed slaves to work for low wages in exchange for them being allowed to continue to live on the estate. Most refused and  settled on menial hillside terrain nearby.

These settlements were established with assistance from the Baptist Church. Their names reflecting their new found freedom, and or their location, such as Free Hill, Roadside and Liberty. You pass them as you traverse these beautiful mountains.

Adventure begins...

We arrive at H’Evans Gate, the site of our first adventure. This episode as mentioned earlier is about Paint Balling which involves using a C02 powered marker/gun to shoot plastic wrapped paint balls at a target (your friend, or frenemy).

We meet and greet the staff of H’Evans Scent and are lucky enough to meet MR. MOTIVATOR himself the CEO.
We view the wonderful rustic property, furnished with 2 paintball arenas and equipped with a spectator zone (bleachers).

We divide ourselves into 2 evenly split teams of 5 - "Gaza" and "Shottas". We get briefed about rules, challenges and most importantly our gear; Marker/Gun, Helmet, Neck Guard and Chest Plate (for the fearful). We sign up for 2 challenges.

Capture the Flag
(Event 1)
A flag (2 tied-up bandanas) is placed in the centre of the battlefield with the 2 teams placed at  opposing ends of the grounds. The objective is for one sacrificial lamb from each team to get the flag and run back into their safe zone without getting shot.

The first event has 4 rounds with an intense gun battle for each round. Teach is able to draw first blood for his team with an early seek and retrieve move for the flag. But Johnnie B Bad general retaliates skilfully using gymnastic techniques to dodge the barrage of gun fire being hurled at him as he ran back to the safe zone.

Round 3 sees the Shottas perform excellent team work with awesome chemistry as they create a protective wall of 'pin down fire' as Johnnie B Bad is yet again able to get the flag and get back to safety.

The 4th round sees an unfortunate delay as Johnnie B Bad makes it to the flag but is accused of being shot. The game is then paused for a body check. Then, out of nowhere, HIDE and SEEK stealthily runs to the flag and  back to the safe zone without being hit, unjustly claiming a point to end the first round at 2 all.

Last Man Standing
(Event 2)
2 teams are placed in an arena at  opposite ends.  Objective- shoot your enemy until all your enemies have been annihilated.

The second event also has 4 rounds, with Gaza taking an early lead performing some covert operations on the Shottas team for the sniping Taliban and Johnnie B Bad. Round 2 however sees some excellent sportsmanship by the Shottas team as each team member is able to pin down their enemy and later eliminate them.

Round 3 and 4 are dominated by the Gaza team as guns constantly malfunction due to depleted C02 stores in the canisters. Shottas getting the worst of the curse.

At the end of the battle we all sit and chat with the staff members and have a good laugh about the day’s activities, noting the head shot performed by Baby Shotta on Co Co (she do it again… she beat him…).

The staff offer to prepare a meal (Jerk Chicken and Festival) however we had our minds set on Scothies,  a jerk hut right outside of Ocho Rios, famous for their jerk sausage.

Episode 1 was a day well spent...  with friends, food , adventure and adrenaline.
